Locksmith service guide

Car key replacement

What an auto locksmith does to cut a new car key, program it to your vehicle and sort the remote — and what to have ready.

A town, city or outward postcode is enough.

You contact providers directly. We do not ask for your exact address.

When this service helps

It becomes urgent when every key is lost and the car is stuck somewhere unsafe.

Find a locksmith

What normally happens

  • The locksmith checks who you are and that the car is yours
  • They work out the right key and chip for your vehicle
  • They cut the key, program it and test it

How long it takes

Often 45-120 minutes

Ask the locksmith for a full itemised price — call-out, labour and any parts — before agreeing to the work.

What to prepare

  • Registration, make, model and year
  • Whether you still have a working key
  • Where you are, and proof the car is yours

Questions to ask

  • Does that include both cutting and programming?
  • Will you wipe the lost keys so they no longer work?
  • What happens if the programming does not take?
