Locksmith service guide

Home lockout

How a locksmith is likely to get you back in, what proof they will ask for, and what to check before they set off.

A town, city or outward postcode is enough.

You contact providers directly. We do not ask for your exact address.

When this service helps

It is urgent if a child, an older or vulnerable person, a pet, medication or anything unsafe is shut inside. If someone is in danger right now, call 999.

Find a locksmith

What normally happens

  • The locksmith works out the type of door and lock
  • They usually try to get in without damage first
  • They should explain any drilling or replacement before starting

How long it takes

Often 20-60 minutes once they arrive

Ask the locksmith for a full itemised price — call-out, labour and any parts — before agreeing to the work.

What to prepare

  • A photo of the door and lock
  • Your postcode and the type of property
  • Something to show you are allowed in

Questions to ask

  • What is the call-out charge?
  • What total should I expect?
  • Would you ever need to drill, and why?
